Joe Buford returns to racing June 26

Joe Buford, the all time win leader at Nashville’s Fairgrounds Speedway will be returning to competition in the June 26 season opening Pro Late Model 125 at the historic city landmark. Buford, who has not been a full time competitor at the track for a number of years, said that he is looking forward to adding to his record of 66 feature victories. “We’re going to be there to win. I think we’ve got a great shot,” he said.

Fairgrounds Speedway promoter Tony Formosa agreed, saying, “Joe Buford is always a contender. He’s a driver that you can always count on to be in the hunt when the checkered flag flies.”

While Buford may not have been in competition in recent years, he hasn’t been too far away from the action, either. Last season he piloted fans around the track in The Ride of Your Life ride-along car. “I think that got him going,” Formosa said. “He was ready to race after that.”

“It’s huge to be able to have Joe Buford run in my first race as a promoter,” Formosa said. “This is something we have talked about before, and it’s great to be able to make it happen. Joe is one of the greatest drivers in the history of the track, and now fans will be able to see him in action again!”

Other drivers scheduled to compete on June 26 include two-time Daytona 500 winner, and current Fairgrounds Speedway track record holder, Sterling Marlin, and 2006 Late Model track champion Mark Day.

Though the 2010 season will be Formosa’s first as a promoter, fans familiar with the track already know his name. The Formosa family has competed at the track since the first year of weekly races in 1958, and legendary drivers such as “Bullet” Bob Reuther, Jimmy Griggs, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt, and Casey Atwood have all piloted Formosa race cars. In all, Formosa cars have won over 200 races at various tracks around the region. Formosa said he plans to have the same success as a promoter as he did as a competitor, but stressed that he can’t do it without the support of the fans. “Now is the time for the fans to make a stand,” Formosa said. “It’s their time to support this facility and this sport in Nashville. We can keep this facility alive. We can do it together.”

Buford agreed, saying, “I’d really hate to see this track go away. There is so much history here. This is where I cut my teeth in racing, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish.” Along with his feature win record, Buford is also a four-time Late Model champion at the track. In addition, he won the 1998 Heartland regional championship in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series.

In addition to the Pro Late Model 125, other events on the Saturday, June 26 card include a 75-lap race for the Supertrucks, and a 75-lap race for the Frank Kimmell Street Stock cars. Friday night, June, 25, will be the qualifying night for the June 26 events, as well as hosting action on the quarter-mile track. That night, there will be 30 laps each for Super Street, Open Wheel and Legends cars, and 20 laps each for Frontrunners and Dwarf cars. Numbergate 1995

Darrell Waltrip returned to the Nashville Speedway for the 1995 Opryland 320. This was the first Busch Grand National race under Bob Harmon's regime. Waltrip was driving a car prepared by Bob Labonte racing, and a teammate to Terry Labonte and David Green.

Waltrip practiced and qualifyed using his Winston Cup number, 17.

However, Robbie Reiser was also using #17, and was ranked higher in points, so he was allowed to keep the number. Waltrip had to change his to #11. Of course, Waltrip had won a race or two with that number as well.

Waltrip went on to win the pole (his last in the Busch Series) and finish 8th, Reiser finished 9th for his best career result, Labonte finished 3rd, and Green won the race. Complete rasults can be found here.

My First Race

The first stock car race I ever went to was the Phillips 66/Mockingbird 300 at the Fairgrounds on March 21, 1993. I don't remember a whole lot about it (I would have been nine at the time), but I can assure you I had a good time. I do remember that Scott Hansen won in an Oldsmobile. I thought that the wrap-around rear windows on those Oldsmobiles were so cool...

During my last trip to Talladega, I found an article about the race in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame library. The librarian was nice enough to let me make a copy of the article. Maybe next trip I'll bring a portable scanner and make a more permanent copy.

Of course, being a kid, I couldn't pass the souvenir stand without begging dad for a small memento. Naturally he relented, so I (he) bought the official Nashville Motor Raceway car. It served as the pace car for quite a few 1:64 races.

(This isn't the actual car, but one like it. The original has about 62% less paint left on it than this one.)

A New Direction...

Well, things are changing. The days for our glorious little track appear to be numbered, so with that, I have decided to change this blog from reporting the present to reporting the past.

There are a couple of other great blogs that concentrate mainly on the present. They are great about posting news about the current situation of the track, info about Fair Board meetings, etc. While some of that news will invariably find its way on to this blog as well, the point of this blog is to reflect on the past. It will serve as a memorial to the great times spent at the track. I want it to stay positive, and will restrict comments that take a negative view of things, both past and present.

I plan to be posting stories, videos, pictures and other things from all eras on a regular basis. However, I was a late comer to the track as my first races I saw there were in the early 90s. So, if the blog tends to lean toward that time period through the end of last season, you'll have to forgive me. I will make an effort to include all time periods, though.

I'll get the updates started within the next few days, so be sure to check back often!

All American 400 Weekend Cancelled

Ricky Goins leads from the pole.
Lap 1, Battling in the middle of the pack, Cody Buford and Steve Hadley make contact sending Buford into the wall. He was able to continue, though, and no caution came out.
Lap 7- DJ Sokol gets around Goins to take the top spot.
Lap 16- Howard Tucker gets around Sokol to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 17- While battling for second, Buford and Sokol crash hard coming off turn 2. Goins also receives extensive damage in the crash.
Caution, Lap 22- Duane King goes up in a cloud of smoke on the frontstretch.
Tucker holds off a late cherge from Jimmy Victory to take the win.

Lap 36- While running fourth, Michael House falls off the pace and pits.
Caution, Lap 51- Daniel Bolden and Stacey Crain make contact in turn 1 sending Crain into the wall.

Dillon Oliver draws a 1 on the inversion and starts at the front of the second segment.
Oliver dominates a caution free second segment to win the Ken-Ten 125 driving away.

The initial start wasn't to spec, so they'll line up for another try.
Caution, Lap 1- Adam Adcock and Joshua Hood come together on the frontstretch. Since a lap wasn't completed, the race will once again be restarted.
Once the race gets going, Clint Ivey leads.
Caution, Lap 2- Taylor Ryman stalls in turn 1.
Lap 6- Adam Adcock gets around Ivey to take the lead.
Lap 17- While battling for the lead, Adcock and Robert Forsythe both spin in turn 4. Cory Jones inherits the lead.
Caution, Lap 21- George Saldana apparently loses an engine and spins in turn 3.
Caution, Lap 26- Terry Vickers spins in turn 4.
Lap 27- Clint Ivey moves back into the lead.
Lap 32- Forsythe takes the top spot.
Caution, Lap 36- Saldana comes back out onto the track, but is still leaking oil causing Adcock to spin.
Forsythe is able to withstand a late charge from Jones to take the win.

Stephen Collins grabs the lead from the pole.
Caution, Lap 1-Kevin Gregory gets turned around coming out of turn 4.
Lap 2- David Harrod gets around Collins for the lead.
Lap 5- Billy Schaffer takes the lead from Harrod.
Caution, Lap 18- J. Isaac Davis gets turned into the outside wall coming off of turn 2.
The restart was aborted, but the leaders apparently didn't realize as they began racing. On the backstretch, the two came together and both cars have now been knocked out of the race. Sam Owens is the new leader.
Coming to the flag, Owens is able to win a drag race with second place Scott Allen to take the win.

Dwarf cars:

Don Walls leads from the pole.
Lap 2- Walls gets loose in turn 1, allowing Mark Cole and Greg Gresham past. Gresham then gets around Cole going into turn 3 to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 9- Walls spins on the frontstretch and is unable to get his car refired.
Caution, Lap 13- Michael Wood gets turned around in turn 2. Rick Webster is being sent to the rear for his part in the incident.
Lap 18- Tim Lunn pulls underneath of Gresham to take the lead.
Lunn is able to hang on for the win. On the final lap, Webster's car got loose and shot hard into the wall on the backstretch. He was able to climb from the car unhurt.

Chevy White jumps to the lead at the start.
Mark Day and White are locked in a side by side battle. Day leads the third lap, but White is able to pull back in front.
Lap 9, White and Day make contact coming off the fourth corner, allowing Marlin to slip by them both and take the lead.
Once Marlin got to the lead he was untouched and cruised to the victory.

Clint Crowell pulls to the lead from the pole.
Caution, Lap 13- Kyle Fletcher gets into Stacey Crain sending him spinning in turn 4. Points leader Bobby Buttrey has to slam on the breaks to narrowly avoid Crain's spinning truck.
Lap 16- Wade Buttrey moves around Crowell to take the lead.
Lap 28- Willie Allen gets around Buttrey to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 29- Terry Hayes spins in turn 1.
Allen is able to pull away from the field and take a convincing victory.

The first attempt at the start was aborted after Jeff Belt jumped too soon.

Caution, Lap 12- Michael Mitchell gets loose coming off of turn 4 and makes contact with the outside wall. He is able to continue.
Belt is in a class of his own and leads every lap en route to an easy victory.

After battling for a couple of laps, George Saldana hooks up on the outside to take the lead from pole sitter Jay Pryor.
Lap 3-Pryor and Clint Ivey make contact in turn 1 sending both cars spinning. No caution.
Lap 5- Cory Jones gets around Saldana for the top spot.
Caution, Lap 9- In a tight battle for the lead, the lapped car of Pryor gets into Jones sending him spinning. Robert Forsythe is able to slip by on the inside to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 9- LeRoy Binkley comes to a stop in turn 1.
Caution, Lap 22- Binkley, Jones, and Ivey all crash heavily on the backstretch. Jones and Binkley have both been disqualified from the race for their part in the incident.
Once Forsythe got the lead he was never challenged and he hangs on for an easy victory.

Caution, Lap 19- Chuck Tuck gets loose and pounds the inside wall.
Caution, Lap 35- Mike Pruitt turns Michael House going into turn 1. Both cars sustain heavy damage and will be out of the race.
Lap 60- Daniel Pope pulls alongside White to challenge for the top spot, but White is able to hold him off.
Lap 71- This time, Pope is able to clear White to take over the lead.
Caution, Lap 77- Debris.
Clay Greenfield is first out of the pits, followed by Day and White.
Lap 82- Day gets around Greenfield for the lead.
Lap 83- White works around Day for the top spot.
Caution, Lap 91- Debris in turn 2.
Caution, Lap 107- Rob Sanders blows a tire and makes slight contact with the turn 2 wall. He is able to continue, however.

Kyle Ivey, Larry Deal, and DJ Sokol crashed hard during Sportsman practice. It is yet to be seen if any of the three will be able to compete tonight.

Former Fairgrounds Speedway regular Bennie Hamlett returns to Late Model competition tonight.

Supertruck Rookie of the Year contender Rob Sanders is making his Late Model debut.

Cole Williams, points leader for the MMRA Eastern Future Stars, is on hand for tonight's Mini Cup feature.

Daniel Pope leads from the pole.
Lap 3- Mark Day moves into the lead. Sterling Marlin follows for second.
Lap 22- After a spirited battle, Marlin moves past Day to take the top spot.
Once Marlin moved into the lead, he proved to be too strong for the rest of the field and picked up his second victory of the season.

Supertruck:

Terry Hayes gets the jump on the field and leads.
Lap 3- Daniel Bolden gets around Hayes to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 3- Coming off turn 4, Stacey Crain spins Hayes. Kyle Fletcher, Bobby Buttrey, and Clint Crowell are all involved in the incident. With the exception of Crane, all drivers are able to continue.
Caution, Lap 27- Wendell Mobley and Fletcher make contact battling for second, resulting in Mobley spinning in turn 1. Mobley made slight contact with the wall, but is able to continue. Fletcher is being sent to the rear for his part in the incident.
With his toughest competition damaged in crashes, Bolden cruises to an easy win.

Caution, Lap 21- Kyle Ivey spins in turn 4.
Buford and White are impressive in their charge through the field, but Taylor is too strong and holds on for the win.

Scott Hantz works the outside line to take the lead.
Red Flag, Lap 6- A massive crash down the frontstretch collects several cars. Ken McFarland, Rickey McCray, Brandon Loverock, Mason Mingus, Kyle Busch, Nick Lay, and Jim Crabtree are all involved. Busch and McCray have been able to continue; however all of the other cars appear to be out of the race.
The yellow flag has come back out. Busch and McCray have repaired their cars, and are still on the lead lap.
Lap 11- Josh Vadnais gets alongside Hantz for the lead, but Hantz is able to hold onto the top spot.
Lap 14- This time Vadnais is able to wrestle the lead from Hantz.
Caution, Lap 47- Fourth place runner Scott Carlson blows a right front tire and pounds the turn 1 wall.
Top five at lap 50- Josh Vadnais, Scott Hantz, Johanna Long, Boris Jurkovic, John Bolen.
Lap 60- Busch powers into fourth position by passing Bolen and Long on the outside.
At halfway, the top five are: Vadnais, Hantz, Jurkovic, Busch, Bolen.
Lap 90- Bolen and Long get around Busch for fourth and fifth.
Lap 95- Hantz moves back around Vadnais to take the top spot.
Top five at lap 100: Hantz, Jurkovic, Vadnais, Bolen, Long.
Caution, Lap 104- Debris.
Under the caution, Busch pits to make adjustments to his ill-handling car. He will restart 11th.
Top five at lap 125: Hantz, Jurkovic, Bolen, Long, Johnny VanDoorn.
Lap 127- Busch goes a lap down.
Lap 129- Bolen moves into second.
Lap 130- Busch pits under green flag for adjustments. He has gotten out of the car and is apparently out of the race.
Caution, Lap 134- Tim Russell spins on the backstretch.
With seven laps to go, Bolen has caught Hantz and is hounding him for the lead.
Hantz is able to hold off Bolen's charge and takes the victory.

Caution, Lap 6- Goddard puts Belt into the wall in turn 4. The race has been red-flagged due to a ruckus on pit road.
Lap 7- Cody Buford gets around White to take the lead.
Caution, Lap 10- Larry Deal spins by himself in turn 4. He doesn't hit anything and is able to continue.
Caution, Lap 16- Eddie Taylor blows an engine coming down the frontstretch.

Caution, Lap 38- Children were playing in the grassy area outside of turn 4. The caution had to be thrown to get them away to safety.
On the restart, Sanders was able to get back around Day for the lead.
Caution, Lap 48- Bobby Buttrey and Daniel Bolden make contact while racing down the backstretch. Buttrey spins and noses his car into the wall. Travis Trotter also spins trying to miss the incident. Trotter is able to continue, but Buttrey is done for the night.
On this restart. Day is able to use the outside line to move back into the lead.
Lap 68- Sanders moves back around Day to re-assume the lead.
Lap 74- Day has fallen back to the fifth position.
Caution, Lap 75- The caution flies for the lap 75 break.
Mark Day is unable to rejoin the rest of the field after the break. His crew has pushed the car behind the wall and to the welding truck.
On the restart, Davey Coble rockets to the lead from the outside front row.
Lap 84- Sanders gets around Coble to regain the lead.
Caution, Lap 94- Jimmy Victory and Mason Mingus crash racing for fourth. Stacey Crain also spins but is undamaged. Victory is also able to continue, but Mingus is done for the night.

It's a beautiful day for racing at the Fairgrounds Speedway. Several local drivers, including Bobby Buttrey, Daniel Bolden, and Mark Day, are entered in tonight's Ken-Ten 125 lap feature. The action is sure to be intense!

Fairgrounds Speedway Supertruck competitor Stacey Crain is entered in tonight's Ken-Ten 125.

Former Fairgrounds Speedway regular Bennie Hamlett is also entered in tonight's feature race.

Chase Oliver hits the wall hard in turn 2. His car briefly catches fire, but Oliver is able to emerge unhurt. It is unknown if his team will be able to prepare a backup car for tonight's race.

Cars from the American Chevelle Enthusiast Society are on display in front of the crowd.

On the restart, Cummings gets around Bush.
Lap 16- Bush moves back around Cummings.
Caution, Lap 17- Kevin Figueroa comes to a stop in turn 4. Under caution, Scott Williams, Aaron Ashcroft, and Williams Owens make contact. Owens comes out on the short end of the incident as his car is stuffed hard into the turn 2 wall.
The restart has been called off after officials determined that Cummings jumped the green flag.
Bush holds off a charge from Cummings to take the win.
